Nalagarh

Nalagarh is a beautiful hill station in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Once an important kingdom, Nalagarh was known as the state of Hindur in the bygone era. Nalagarh serves as the entryway to Himachal Pradesh. It is located about 300 km from Delhi and about 60 km from Chandigarh. ''

Nalagarh is very famous for its picturesque beauty. The Nalagarh Valley is a long band surrounded by the spurs of the outer Himalayas to its north-east and the heavily eroded range of the Shivaliks in the south and west. One can see the ruins of many forts around the valley, which include the forts of Chamba, Surajupur, Ramgarh and Malaon.

Also known as Nawalgarh, it was renowned in the medieval period as the state of Hindur which was founded by Raja Ajai Chand in 1100 AD. The Chandela Rajputs were great patrons of art and architecture of Nalagarh. Since then, many Rajputs have inhabited Nalagarh to engage in farming in the Chikni Sirsa Valley.The Ramgarh Fort and the associated town of Ramshere demonstrate the excellence and unique craftsmanship of the yesteryears. Raja Surendra Singh was the last ruler of Nalagarh and his son.

Best time to visit Nalagarh is from March to October. But the best time to enjoy indoor as well as outdoor activity is from September to May.

PLACES AROUND NALAGARH

Ramgarh fort - is located 21 kilometers away from the city and was founded by Raja Ram Chnader of the Chander dynasty.

Naina Devi - Located 60 kilometers away from the city, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Naina Devi. In fact, it is also believed that Nainital got its name from this holy Goddess.

Mughal Gardens, Pinjore - Mughal Gardens in Pinjore is located 35 kilometers away from the city. It makes for a great picnic spot and houses a Japanese garden, plants nursery and mini zoo.

Swarghat - If you love trekking or are a wildlife enthusiast, then Swarghat will make a good choice for you. Covered by pine trees and bound by low rolling hills Swarghat is known to be a famous tourist spot. Bhakra Dam is located close to this tourist attraction.

Yadavindra Gardens - Standing on the foothills of Mount Shivalik, this charming garden comes with seven terraced lawns. The Mughal styled garden was designed by Nawab Fadai Khan in the seventeenth century. It also serves as a host to the Biasakhi festival and Mango festival.

Nalagarh Heritage Resort - This fort a simple heritage hotel which is standing stagnant from the past 350 years. The same group of artisans under the leadership of Kushal Singh, who created the marvelous Khajuraho temple, constructed it. It has a very special and unique sun clock and the interiors of this fort are beautifully decorated with art and sculptures, which makes it a very beautiful fort indeed.

Summers at Nalagarh start around April and last up to June. The average temperature during this time is about 24 – 30 degree C. Winters are during December to February when temperature ranges from 4 degree C to 20 degree C. Snowfall is common during this time.

Air: The nearest airport to Nalagarh is Chandigarh, about 58 km away. Chandigarh is well connected by air with Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Srinagar.

Rail: Ghanauli is the nearest railway station, 14 km away. Ghanauli is well connected by rail route to other major cities including Delhi. There are a number of private local taxis running on the route to Nalagarh from Ghanauli.
